Google Maps lands in Ghana

Google Maps of most Ghananian towns are now accessible via web browsers or enabled mobile handsets.

Google Maps users in Ghana will be able to check out online maps, search for businesses, create maps, look for locations while on the move and advertise for free on Google Maps Local Business Centre.

“Our goal is to make information with a geographical dimension available to everyone and to allow users to update the maps and develop on top of them. We believe more accurate, representative local information can greatly improve the breadth of information available about a given area and in turn can help efforts to bolster tourism and business investment”, commented Estelle Akofia-Sowah, Google’s Ghana representative.

The service covers towns like Accra and Kumasi, with the possibility of updating maps through Google Map Maker and creating custom-built maps for specific locations such as restaurants and clubs. Satellite, aerial photographs and geography maps are offered in addition to the traditional view mode.

In February, Google launched it Map service in 30 African countries, including Ghana. So far, 32 African countries have access to Google Maps, including South Africa and Kenya.
