Sedna Africa helps mining companies turn fragmented operational data into a single source of truth

As mining companies accelerate investment in automation, artificial intelligence and digital transformation, access to trusted operational data has become a strategic priority. Yet many operations continue to rely on fragmented reporting processes involving spreadsheets, messaging platforms, emails and manual data consolidation that were never designed to work together. These disconnected systems delay access to critical production information, increase the risk of human error and make it difficult for management to gain a complete, real-time view of operations.

Sedna Africa has addressed this challenge through the design, implementation and ongoing support of an enterprise Operational Technology (OT) reporting platform that modernises how production and operational information is captured, managed and reported across mining operations.

The solution replaces a patchwork of manual reporting methods—including WhatsApp messages, Excel spreadsheets, PDF reports, emails and paper-based processes—with a secure web-based reporting platform integrated into a central SQL reporting environment and Microsoft’s Power BI ecosystem. The result is a single source of truth for operational reporting that significantly improves data quality, reporting speed, governance and decision-making.

Before the implementation, production information originated from numerous independent sources across mining operations, including contractor systems, OEM platforms, SCADA, MineWare, CAT Terrain, MineSuite, plant systems, spreadsheets, emails, messaging applications and manual paperwork. Because these platforms operated independently, production figures frequently had to be manually collected and consolidated before daily management reports could be produced.

This resulted in time-consuming report generation, duplicate data capture, inconsistent reporting standards between operations, increased risk of human error, limited data governance and delays in delivering production information to decision-makers.

“The challenge wasn’t simply replacing spreadsheets,” says Shawn Nortjé, Operations Director at Sedna Africa. “Mining operations rely on numerous specialised operational systems, each designed to perform a specific function. Our objective was to create an enterprise reporting architecture capable of bringing these disparate data sources together into a single, trusted reporting environment without disrupting existing operational technology investments. Today, the platform supports 109 users across two mining operations, generates 18 automated operational reports every day, and is already being prepared for deployment at a third site. Once production information has been captured, reports that previously required significant manual consolidation are generated automatically in just a few minutes, giving management near real-time access to trusted operational data.”

To overcome these challenges, Sedna Africa designed and developed a completely new reporting architecture comprising several integrated components.
