Egypt political activists turn to internet

THE internet has become the new source of activism for Egypt’s growing opposition movement, Muslim Brotherhood.

The use of the internet has enabled the Islamic group to spread the message ahead of massive protests in opposition of the war raging in Gaza. Leading that charge has been the younger generation born under the current leadership of President Hosni Mubarak.

In 2004, Egypt had a mere 40-registered web logs, but today that number has risen to well over the 1 000, creating a new medium for the diffusion of ideas. This transmission has been beneficial to the growing opposition movement in the country, creating modes in which activists communicate.

One of those bloggers, university student Abdul-Rahman Mansour, has been instrumental in establishing the young blogger movement as a means for change.

During ongoing protests against Israel, Mansour and the dozens of other Muslim Brotherhood movement bloggers have led the campaign to speak against the Egyptian government.

“It is because we are fed up with the government and the actions they have taken during this war,” the 21-year-old Mansour told ITNewsAfrica.

Mansour, a university student, also doubles as an editor for the movement’s English language website. –ITNewsAfrica.
