Telkom Enhances Digital Mobile Contract Sign-Up with End-to-End Online Journey

As more South Africans embrace digital channels for everyday transactions, Telkom has enhanced its online mobile postpaid platform, allowing new customers to complete the entire contract application process digitally without human intervention.

The new capability forms part of Telkom’s broader digital transformation strategy and is designed to simplify what has traditionally been a complex, agent-assisted customer journey.

Rather than simply replicating an in-store application online, the platform automates key stages of the process, enabling customers to apply for a mobile contract, verify their identity, complete required documentation and track their order through a single digital journey.

A major focus of the platform is security and customer trust. Telkom has introduced facial recognition for identity verification, real-time account and deposit validation, and integrated e-signature functionality.

These features are intended to address concerns that may discourage customers from completing mobile contract applications online, including uncertainty around identity verification, payment processes and what happens after an order has been submitted.

Customers will also have access to end-to-end order tracking, providing visibility into the progress of an order from dispatch through to delivery.

For Telkom, the enhanced platform is also expected to help address checkout abandonment. Lengthy forms, complicated verification procedures and uncertainty during the purchasing process can result in customers abandoning online transactions or seeking assistance from customer service channels.

By automating more of the process and reducing friction, Telkom aims to improve online completion rates while providing customers with greater flexibility and control.

The initiative is being driven by Telkom Consumer and Small Business IT, led by Chief Digital and IT Officer Dr Noxolo Kubheka-Dlamini. Telkom worked with technology partner Amdocs to deliver the underlying Business Support Systems (BSS) capabilities and architecture supporting the end-to-end digital experience.

The architecture is also expected to support future developments, including additional customer segments and product configurations.

“This launch reflects a deliberate effort to make digital engagement simpler, more secure and more responsive to customer needs,” says Kubheka-Dlamini.

“By combining an intuitive online journey with robust identity and order tracking capabilities, we’re building greater trust in digital channels and giving customers the confidence to complete their mobile postpaid journeys entirely online, on their own terms.”

Telkom has also launched brand and technical videos explaining the new customer journey. The videos cover processes including identity verification, deposit payments and order tracking, and are being distributed across Telkom’s digital and social channels.
