MTC to distribute laptops to Namibian schools

To foster ICT development in Namibia, Mobile Telecommunication Company (MTC) has started distributing laptop computers to schools in the country. The distribution is aimed at promoting Namibia’s e-school program, which will impart computer knowledge to students.

MTC is partially owned by Portugal Telecom, which has operations in Botswana, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique and Morocco.

“Portugal Telecom plans to expand its portfolio in all the emerging markets, particularly in the African region,” said the company’s CEO, Zeinal Bava

The computers have been imported from Portugal, and Namibian schools are already signing agreements with MTC and receiving their laptops.

MTC has invested over US$1 million in the purchase and distribution of the laptops with broadband connectivity. The investment comes on the heels of the company’s announcement that it has reached a subscriber base of 1 million.

As many schools in Namibia are not connected to the national power grid, Bava said MTC will also provide over 300 schools with generators in order to power the computers.
