Egypt’s last Internet provider shuts off

Since Friday morning only one Egyptian Internet Service Provider (ISP) was giving service to its customers. On Monday evening Cairo time, the tiny Noor Group ended its availability as a result of government pressure.
Earl Zmijewski, the general manager of the Internet monitoring company Renesys told reporters that the Internet went out at 10:46 pm local time.
“It looks like they’re completely lights-out now,” he said in an interview.
Noor was the final company running in Egypt.
All email, web surfing and any Internet-based function are unavailable in the country. Satellite connections are the only alternative for people on the ground. Mobile phones are expected to again be shut down early Tuesday morning ahead of a planned million man march in Cairo by demonstrators.
Noor was small, handling only about 8 percent of Egyptian connections, but had been a lifeline to the outside world when the government forced other providers to cut service.
