Zain Ghana has introduced a mobile money service named Zap, to allow customers to transfer money nationwide using their mobile phones.

Zap is currently available in several African “Zap-enabled” countries, namely Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Niger and Sierra Leone.

According to a survey, 80% of Ghana’s work force is not saving at the banks and keep money in unsafe places at home, said Philip Sowah, Country Manager of Zain Ghana. He urged customers to use mobile banking as a convenient way to make formal transactions, pay utilities and services and withdraw cash.

Users will have an account on their mobile phone and a stored account on the Zain system, managed through accredited agents and banks including United Bank of Africa, Standard Chartered Bank and Ecobank.

“We at Zain aim to create a cashless society where Zap service would be used to make direct purchases instead of actual exchange of money. We have started with the regulations and other policy development and after clearance the service would commence”, concluded Sowah.
