MTN sues Uganda Telecom

MTN has sued Uganda Telecom and is seeking UGS7.2 billion (USD3.55 million) for unpaid interconnection fees..

According to Uganda’s Daily Monitor, MTN Uganda and its competitor signed the disputed agreement for the period November 2008 to September 2009. The operator is seeking a payment of Shs7.2 billion in interconnection fees from its rival, and has taken the matter to the Kampala High Court’s Commercial Division.

According to the initial contract, the two parties agreed to pay each other interconnection fees for the stated period, but Uganda Telecom has failed to pay its part, reads MTN Uganda’s official complaint.

Uganda Telecom has issued two cheques worth Shs600 million as payment for the debt, however the cheques bounced, said the complaint, claiming payment of full amount, including interest, damages and costs to MTN.

Uganda Telecom has 15 days to respond to the case.
