Alcatel-Lucent and Togo Cellulaire partner in 3G network in Togo
Togo Cellulaire and Alcatel Lucent today announced a Euro 22 million deal to extend mobile capacity and build a 3G wireless broadband network in the country by the end of 2010.
The new network will enable Togo Cellulaire, the leading mobile operator in the country, to offer advanced mobile broadband services to more than 2.2 million subscribers in Togo.
“This new contract further strengthens our long-standing cooperation with Togo Cellulaire and highlights their confidence in our comprehensive solutions and local support capabilities. Togo Cellulaire will leverage Alcatel-Lucent’s experience in delivering advanced wireless networks in Africa and globally”, said Amr El Leithy, head of Alcatel-Lucent’s activities in Africa and the Middle East.
The partnership between Alcatel-Lucent and Togo Cellulaire started in 1998, with the deployment of mobile solutions and applications such as core network, mobile email, billing and radio access.
Alcatel-Lucent will provide a full end-to-end turnkey solution, including its converged radio access network (RAN) portfolio to support both 2G and 3G-based services over the same platforms and allow rapid increase and voice traffic towards 4G.
Togo Cellulaire was inaugurated in July 1998 and is a subsidiary of Togo Telecom, the sate owned operator. With more than 1.6 million subscribers (99% prepaid), Togo Cellulaire enjoys a 75% market share.
