FIFA, world’s soccer governing body, along with the South Africa’s World Cup Local Organising Committee (LOC), have warned the public against the prevalence of fraudulent e-mail messages making false claims about prizes.
The e-mails fraudulently claim that recipients have won prizes awarded by FIFA and the LOC.
In a statement, the world body said: “FIFA continues to be alerted to e-mails fraudulently claiming to be associated/ linked with FIFA, the 2010 FIFA World Cup and/or Local Organizing Committee informing recipients that they have been selected as prize winners in a lottery draw and have won substantial sums of money. Many of these e-mails appear to be official and most of them ask recipients to provide their personal details, including bank account information, in order to claim the prize money.”
“Such scam emails try to persuade the email receiver to submit personal information or to part with money as an up front payment in order to release a prize,”
The organization also distanced itself from any e-mail lotteries or competitions to do with the FIFA body or the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.
