Econet set to increase subscriber base in Zimbabwe

Econet Wireless is stepping up efforts in Zimbabwe with a view to increase its subscriber base before the end of this year.

Already Econet Wireless is a leading cellular mobile in Zimbabwe with more than a million subscribers, and the company aims at increasing its subscriber base to a whopping 1 200 000 in the southern African nation.

Apart from operations in Zimbabwe, Econet Wireless has other operations in Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kenya, Lesotho and Nigeria, making the mobile cellular company the fastest growing indigenous African communication company in the continent.

According to Econet Wireless Corporate Communications Manager, Rangarirai Mberi, his company is embarking on a massive expansion drive in Zimbabwe aimed at increasing the subscriber base, a move that would see its revenue base grow too.

In order to achieve this goal, Econet Wireless would closely work with its technical partners such as Ericsson and ZTE, a huge consortium from China.

“This current phase of expansion will see capacity expanded to 1.2 million subscribers. Work is already under way for further expansion to drive capacity beyond this level,” said Mberi.
