Usage of information technology on increase in South Africa

USAGE of information and communication technologies increased marginally during the year as more and more SMEs move with the technological times.

This is according to the latest findings from the annual SME Survey.


The study established that 39 percent purchased UPS devices in the first three months to keep desktops going.

The SME Survey found that 15 percent purchased 3G cards. This however was prompted by load shedding that bedeviled local industry in 2008.

During the period, 29 percent of companies in the small businesses sector moved from moved from desktops to laptops in first 3 months of the year.

“Broadband and IT infrastructure gives an edge,” said principal researcher Arthur Goldstuck.

Meanwhile, of all the crimes that affected businesses in this sector, 15 percent of those happened in the SME sector.

SME Survey is sponsored by Standard Bank and Fujitsu Siemens Computers.

It is in its sixth year and tracks trends and opinions of more than 5 000 South African small, medium and micro enterprises.
