Telkom Kenya’s Orange brand launch will make the firm the third mobile operator in Kenya, placing it in a head-to-head battle with rivals Safaricom and a rejuvenated Zain in the race for subscribers.
Econet Wireless, which is partly owned by India’s Essar, is set to roll-out its mobile services in November, further piling competitive pressure in a market that has been dominated by Safaricom and Zain for nearly a decade.
For Telkom Kenya, this marks the first major assignment since France Telecom acquired a 51 per cent stake in the firm last December as its bets on the mobile and Internet business to push it to the profit zone before 2010.
