MTN acknowledges $8.5m Rwanda Fine
MTN Rwanda in a statement to the press has acknowledged that they have received official notification of a fine equivalent to US$ 8,5 million from the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA).
The fine relates to non-compliance with the Directives issued by the regulator prohibiting the inclusion of MTN Rwanda in the MTN South and East Africa (SEA) IT hub based in Uganda.
The fine comes off the back of a turbulent period for MTN in which they received a fine in their Nigerian sector from the Nigerian Communications Commission for not meeting the deadline set up by the Mobile network operators (MNOs) for disconnecting the Subscribers Identification Modules (SIM) with improper registration. The fine had huge implications on the MTN Groups financials for 2016 which saw them record their first ever loss.
The release stated that MTN has been engaging with the regulator on this matter over the past four months and that MTN Rwanda is currently studying the official notification and will continue to engage with the regulator on this matter.
