Elon Musk unveiled the new Tesla Roadster on 15 October 2026. He invited a live audience for one reason: to prove the car was real and not AI-generated. The Roadster then drove up a towering curved ramp, went upside down and launched off the end. It flipped in mid-air and landed safely on the ground. The crowd saw it happen. This is not a concept vehicle. Tesla has since opened reservation deposits across all three variants.
All USD amounts in this article are converted at approximately R16.64 to the US dollar, based on market rates at 8 October 2026.
The biggest piece of Tesla Roadster news is the carโs physical reveal after years of delays. Tesla first showed a second-generation Roadster concept in 2017. Production was repeatedly pushed back. The McGregor event ended that wait.
Lars Moravy, Teslaโs VP of vehicle engineering, explained the technology on stage. The car carries a fan suction system on its underside. This system can generate up to two Gs of force, allowing the car to drive upside down. Tesla borrowed additional thruster technology directly from SpaceX. Elon Musk confirmed the Roadster has altitude control thrusters and main thrusters at the rear.
A second stunt showed the car accelerate toward a row of parked Tesla vehicles. It fired into the air and completed a โkickflipโ over them. Musk joked it was โnot necessarily a safety-optimised car.โ
The Roadster comes in three variants:
Tesla quotes acceleration in 0-60 mph, the US standard. Sixty miles per hour equals roughly 97 km/h, making it a close reference for the Tesla Roadster 0-100 km/h time. During the McGregor demonstration, the Roadster hit 60 mph in under one second.
The three variants produce different figures. The Tesla Roadster top speed for the Rocket trim is quoted at over 370 km/h (230 mph), per Teslaโs website.
| Variant | Claimed 0-60 mph | Claimed Top Speed |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | Under 1.6 seconds | Not yet confirmed |
| Thrust | Under 1.0 second | Not yet confirmed |
| Rocket | Under 0.59 seconds | Over 370 km/h |
Tesla also claims a range of more than 480 km (300 miles) for the Rocket variant. These are Teslaโs own claims. No independent test results exist yet, as the car is not in customer production.
No final Tesla Roadster price has been announced. Tesla collected reservation deposits at the McGregor event, not purchase prices. The Performance deposit is approximately $50,000, converting to about R832,000. The Thrust deposit is $250,000, converting to about R4.16M.
The Tesla Roadster release date for customer deliveries remains unconfirmed. One report indicates Tesla is targeting production from 2028, though Tesla has not confirmed this officially. The Rocket variant has no public reservation process.
For context, Tesla announced a starting price of $200,000 (about R3.33M) back in 2017. That figure was never finalised as a sale price. No updated pricing has been confirmed for the 2026 model.
South African buyers face an additional hurdle. Tesla does not officially sell vehicles in South Africa. Musk has previously cited high import duties as the barrier to an official local launch. A Roadster arriving here would do so as a private import. That said, with the countryโs petrol price increase pushing costs past R30 a litre, the case for electric vehicles has never been more visible locally.
Details on the Tesla Roadster interior are limited after the McGregor reveal. Tesla did not publish interior specifications or photos at the event. Earlier Tesla specification sheets describe a 2+2 seating layout. That means two full front seats and two smaller rear seats. A removable glass panel forms the roof and stores in the boot area. Tesla has not confirmed whether these earlier details apply to the final production car.
The Thrust augment is listed on Teslaโs website as an optional upgrade to the Performance model. It adds the SpaceX cold-gas thruster package. The Rocket takes this further with a full thruster system and is reserved by invitation only.
The Tesla Roadster 2026 has moved from a broken promise to a working prototype. It went upside down on a ramp and launched over other cars. That is no longer in doubt. What remains unclear is the final price, the delivery timeline and the full interior specification. Deposits secure a reservation, not a vehicle. Production, if it begins in 2028, is still two years away.
You should monitor Teslaโs configurator for pricing updates as reservation holders are invited to configure. If you are based in South Africa, watch the countryโs import duty landscape too. A significant change there would be the first step toward making the Tesla Roadster 2026 accessible locally.
