Watching football legally in South Africa changed sharply in 2026. Showmax closed on 30 April 2026, and its Originals moved into a dedicated section of the DStv Stream app. The closure hit soccer fans hardest, because Showmax had offered mobile-only Premier League and PSL access for R99 a month. On 17 September 2026, DStv then launched a new set of packages with revised channels and a dedicated sports tier. This guide covers the apps, prices and data costs you face now. All prices are quoted in rand, as published by the providers and reporting sources.
DStv Stream is now the main legal route for Premier League streaming in South Africa. SuperSport carries the competition, and unlike the old Showmax plan, DStv Stream works on smart TVs as well as phones. Live football on MultiChoice apps is not new. Showmax first added live SuperSport football in 2020 through its Showmax Pro service.
The cheapest entry point is Starter. At R99 a month, Starter includes a Premier League match of the week on the SuperSport Kickoff channel. For a full Premier League soccer TV stream, you need Sports or Premium. The R399 Sports package carries SuperSport’s Premier League and UEFA content.
| 📺 Package | 💰 Monthly Price (ZAR) | ⚽ Football Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | From R99 | Premier League match of the week |
| Select | From R299 | SuperSport PSL content |
| Sports | R399 streaming, R479 satellite | PSL, Premier League, wider football |
| Premium | R799 streaming, R979 satellite | Full SuperSport line-up |
A paid PSL live stream starts at the Select package. Select costs R299 a month and carries SuperSport’s PSL coverage. In June 2026, Canal+ extended its deal with the National Soccer League, covering the Betway Premiership, MTN8, Carling Knockout, Nedbank Cup and Motsepe Foundation Championship.
If you want a soccer live stream without a subscription, SABC is the main legal option. In 2024/25, the SABC’s sub-licence covered 51 matches, including 23 league games on SABC 1 on Saturdays. The 2026/27 season started less smoothly. The SABC skipped the opening league fixtures and expected to begin broadcasts from 15 August 2026, subject to concluding its deal. We could not confirm whether that league agreement has since been signed. Check SABC Sport listings before kick-off.
The SABC+ streaming service passed three million registered users in August 2026. SABC+ is the free streaming app to watch when the public broadcaster holds the rights.
The 2026 MTN8 was available on both pay-TV and free-to-air channels. The SABC confirmed a deal with Canal+ to broadcast the 2026 MTN8, bringing the cup back to free-to-air television. Details are in the SABC media release from 31 July 2026.
The final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on 10 October 2026 aired live on SuperSport PSL and SABC 1. Mamelodi Sundowns won, stopping Orlando Pirates from taking a fifth straight title.
Searching for the best streaming sites often leads to pirate soccer streaming websites. These carry real risks. MultiChoice and Irdeto worked with police in 2024 to dismantle Waka TV, which allegedly redistributed DStv channels. Irdeto also said it was considering action against individuals who paid for pirated content.
Your data bundle is the hidden cost of streaming apps. UK operator Virgin Media O2 estimates that an HD football match uses about 3GB per hour, while SD uses around 1GB. A July 2026 MyBroadband comparison found 10GB bundles from MTN Pi, Shoprite K’Nect and Vodacom at R149 a month. That works out to about R14.90 per GB. Shoprite’s K’nect mobile has competed on price for some time.
| 🎥 Quality | 📶 Data for Two Hours | 💰 Approximate Data Cost (ZAR) |
|---|---|---|
| SD | About 2GB | About R30 |
| HD | About 6GB | About R89 |
Live football TV streaming in HD on mobile data can cost almost as much per match as a week of Starter. You can cut that bill in three ways:
Legal streaming sites in South Africa now come down to DStv Stream for paid football and SABC for selected free matches. If you follow the Premier League and PSL, the R399 Sports package is your realistic entry point. If you only watch local football, Select at R299 may be enough. Starter at R99 suits casual Premier League viewers.
More change is coming. Canal+ is preparing to launch its own streaming app in South Africa, and a local canalplus.com/za page is already live. Until prices for that service are public, budget for both your subscription and your data.
