Vodacom mulls sub-Saharan expansion

SOUTH Africa’s leading cellular mobile company, Vodacom, is considering expanding its cellphone communication business throughout the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, a company official revealed on Thursday.

In an interview with our reporters, Vodacom’s Group Corporate Affairs Manager, Richard Boorman, said: “Vodacom is interested in expanding in sub-Saharan Africa and we’re constantly evaluating opportunities across the entire region.

“One of the key issues is finding attractive opportunities at a price that would allow us to make a reasonable return,” said Boorman.

He said Vodacom had a strong focus on improving returns from its existing operations in South Africa.

Apart from operations in South Africa, Vodacom has presence outside the country in the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo and Mozambique.
