Liquid Telecom partners with Ekinops on fibre expansion

The Herald reports that Liquid Telecom has partnered with Ekinops, a supplier of next generation optical transport equipment, in connection with a new long-haul Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing network across South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

This 2500km network is said to feature the longest uninterrupted fibre spans in Africa and is reported to have been constructed to meet the need for bandwidth and a long-haul transmission network.

According to The Herald the network carries multiple 10Gbit/s wavelengths and can scale to support additional 10Gbit/s and 100Gbit/s services.

The Liquid Telecom Group, a subsidiary of the Econet Wireless Group, has an established fibre network that runs from Uganda to Cape Town.

The fibre network covers a number of key regions throughout the continent including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, DRC, Lesotho and South Africa.
