There has been some speculation as to when Sony will release a follow-up to their successful PlayStation 3, but for the time being a retailer has unveiled a new PlayStation model from Sony – and it’s not the PlayStation 4.
Although the first mention of the CECH-3000 model PlayStation 3 surfaced earlier this year, it has taken all this time to firmly get any specifications on the model. The retailer, who claims to have received a briefing on the new model from Sony, has been filling in the details and educating the throngs of PlayStation fans.
Apparently it has an updated storage capacity of 320GB; the power consumption has been cut from 230W to 200W while neatly packed away in a casing that is 400g lighter than before, weighing in at 2.6kg.
According to media reports, “there are also some external changes to the power and eject buttons, along with the removal of LED lamps, although the retailer report isn’t clear about the specifics for this area.”
As for when the PlayStation 4 will be announced, it might still be a very long time. “PlayStation 3 is really just hitting its stride and technologically, I don’t think it’s possible to provide any advancement beyond what we have. What we’ve seen from the competition is trying to add features that already exist in PlayStation 3,” PlayStation US boss Jack Tretton told Forbes.
“We invested heavily in that; we rolled a very heavy rock up a steep hill, through the launch period. But now I think that all pays off, and we’ve got a long run way behind it. So, I wouldn’t look for any discussion of a next generation PlayStation for quite some time,” he added.
