Uganda networks back to normal

Ugandans and Uganda Telecom breathed a collective sigh of relief on Monday after the company’s network services were completely restored following a weekend of uncertainty due to recent outages.

According to the company, customers were unable to make outgoing calls after the company’s network was hit with outages. UTL said that despite having restored the network on September 26, customers continued to report access problems into the weekend.

Uganda Telecom confirmed on Monday that all glitches had been solved and service is functioning as normal.

Local reports had said that the outage was the result of debts the company had with rival companies, but UTL denied this.

Emmy Olaki, UTL public relations officer, told The Observer that the problem “was partial and technical rather than financial.”

Olaki said the network outage was “caused by a breakdown of part of the central network and it affected only pre-paid customers,” adding that  UTL “had since cleared Airtel’s interconnection fees and is only left with part of MTN’s UGX 20 billion fee accumulated between 2007 and 2010.”

For customers it was welcome news, as they were reporting on Monday full services, both receiving voice calls and sending SMS.
