Research In Motion (RIM), the manufacturers of the Blackberry smartphone, have revealed plans to increase the number of Blackberry phones shipped around the world by at least 2.7 million in the next quarter of the year.
The company shipped more than 10 million such phones during the previous quarter of the year and is confident of increasing devices shipped before the end of the year.
“RIM shipped more than 10 million of the smartphones during the last quarter, and is expecting to grow this number of 27 – 37% in the next quarter,” said Robyn Milham, RIM Head of Enterprise Sales for Southern Africa.
“We continue to be very strong across the globe – we are number one regarding smartphone shipment estimates in Africa according to Canalys (August 2011).”
He said an increasing customer base buoyed the move.
“RIM is a strong business that has strong foundations built on product excellence and a growing and loyal customer base. We have almost US$3 billion in cash with no debt, we grew our revenues 33% last year and we currently have more than 70 million BlackBerry subscribers.”
Rim has a growing base of Blackberry customers in the continent.
Last week, it launched the latest Blackberry 9900 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
