MTN Uganda hopes that its green initiative will help spark continued interest in its localized efforts to help build communities. On Wednesday, the company launched its 21 day “Yellow Care” campaign to plant some 21,000 trees in the country to bolster environmental awareness.

The campaign is being done across all MTN’s African units and is aiming to approach the subject of ecology and environmentalism through what everyday people can do and achieve.

According to the Uganda unit, “employees will swap their suits and jeans for overalls and shovels” and plant some trees.
The Observer blog said that the planting was to begin at the Nsamizi Training Institute of Social Development in Mpigi.
“The initiative seeks to realize sustainable development through greening, climate change action and sustainable natural resource management,” the blog wrote.

Environmentalists in the country are hopeful that it will engender a greater sense of one’s surroundings and help promote green action.
“It is a great plan to get people out of the office and into natural environments where they will make an immediate impact,” said Joanne Atalane, a Kampala-based green campaigner.
The program will run for three weeks and hopes to raise awareness of healthier living, especially in lower-class areas of the country.
