Union welcomes tariff reductions

THE COMMERCIAL Workers Union (CWU) has giventhumps up to the country’s three top mobile cellular phone companies’ move to reduce tariffs.

The rates reduction is being spearheaded by Vodacom, MTN and Cell C and are due to take effect on March 1.


CWU spokesperson, Matankana Mothapo, said workers in the telecommunications industry had cautiously welcomed the unilateral cuts as initiated by Vodacom; MTN; Cell C, Telkom among others.

“We equally appreciate ICASA’s concerns regarding the processes followed by these companies to arrive at these reductions.

“CWU however wish to advance a stern warning that no one should attempt to use these reduction as justification for any negative impact on any Human Resource related matters and in particular job losses,” said
Mothapo.

Mothapo said the companies operating in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector needed to contribute to the creation and sustenance of quality jobs.
