Zimbabwe’s largest mobile cellular operator, Econet Wireless hopes to increase its subscriber base by more than 40 percent.
Econet Wireless has more than three million subscribers to date, and its latest target would increase that number to 5.1 million by end of June this year, spokesman, Rangarirai Mberi confirmed.
Econet intends to achieve its goals by reducing the price of sim cards from US$5 to as little as US$2.
Econet’s price reduction on Libertie SIM cards, the country’s preferred lines started last Friday, and the market welcomed the move.
“This is a positive development in making sure every Zimbabwean enjoys the fruits of cell-phone technology.
Meanwhile Mberi also explained that the first phase of Econet’s fibre optic project was under way in Harare stating that it would be complete before end of March.
