The report, compiled during the 3rd quarter of 2009, also states that the UK is the country with the fastest connection to Africa.

Rabat (3251kbps), Tunis (2211 Kbps) and Casablanca (2030 Kbps) top the lists of the cities with the best connections on the African continent. Regarding Internet penetration, Rabat leads with 26%, succeeded by Casablanca (7.3%), while Midrand in South Africa comes third.

In terms of average speed connections from 2Mbps upward, Morocco’s Rabat also leads with 61%. Tunis rated 48% and Casablanca 33%.

Still, the data gathered from the rest of the world shows that Africa remains behind, with United Stated (ranked 18th worldwide in terms of Internet connectivity) at a rate ten times higher than Morocco (33464 Kbps), but behind South Korea (14,6 MB per second). The Internet penetration rate is 92% for United States, while in some European countries goes close to 99%.

The report was based on information collected from Akamai’s global network of servers. The company also publishes a report on cyber attacks worldwide, tracing them in more than 207 countries. The recent findings shows Russia and Brazil overcoming United States and China as the largest providers of pirates.
