Safaricom pays out millions to sixty subscribers

TELECOMMUNICATIONS service provider Safaricom has awarded 60 subscribers with Sh 1 million each when it wound up its Lipua Mamilioni promotion.

At the end of the two-month promotion, the mobile provider issued some Sh90 million in cash prizes to 300,060 lucky winners.

The final draw saw James Ogoti Atambo, a mason complete the millionaires’ list courtesy of the promotion after making a record 2,700 entries. Winners included ordinary Kenyans from all walks of life among them fruit vendors, bodaboda riders, policeman, masons, drivers, teachers, casual labourers and
students from various institutions spread across the country.

Other lucky winners who were feted today after the last draw include Anthony Macharia Njuguna – a manager at a Sacco, Margaret Njeri Wainaina – a self-employed tailor, Silvery Arewa Okombo – a businessman, Anthony Mbugua Kamau – a part-time Business Administration student at KEMU,
Josephine Gaceri Ndeere – a retired teacher, Kennedy Oluoch Ndera – a casual labourer and Zacharia Muigai Wambui – a teacher.

Speaking during the final handover ceremony at the company’s offices, Safaricom Chief Commercial officer Mr. Peter Arina described the promotion as successful. “Safaricom has succeeded in improving the lives of our loyal subscribers during these hard economic times,” he said.

He also noted that more exciting products and promotions would soon be introduced into the market by Safaricom as the country’s leading telecommunications Service Company strives to consolidate its market share and maintain profitability against the backdrop of heightened competition.

At the end of the promotion, Patrick Thiong’o Kariuki – a form four leaver, Jenifer Nafula Makokha – a charcoal and vegetable seller, Joseph Nduvasi Kimanthi – a biomedical engineering student at the Institute of Health Management, Munene Silas – a Police Officer at Nairobi’s Kayole Police Post, and John Bosco Kinuthia Kamau – a farmer among others walked home Shs1 million richer courtesy of Lipua Mamilioni.

To participate in the promotion, Safaricom PostPay and PrePay subscribers were required to SMS the word “LIPUA” to 555 with each SMS giving the subscriber one entry to the promotion.
