Nokia is accelerating its cost-reduction programme and starting a voluntary redundancy offer. The mobile phone maker is also encouraging staff to make wider use of short-term unpaid leaves and sabbaticals and use up their holiday allowances rather than taking cash compensation. The aim is to avoid forced redundancies, Nokia said. The voluntary redundancy programme will be offered to staff worldwide from 1 March, in accordance with local social plans. The plan is capped at the first 1,000 applicants.
