MTN victim of identity scam

MTN customers have become the latest victims of identity theft scams promising mobile phone subscribers immense rewards.

The mobile network provider said a fraudulent sms was doing the rounds, announcing that the company was awarding cars to customers ahead of the FIFA 2010 World Cup of which MTN is a sponsor.

It distanced itself from such a scheme.

“Customers are alerted to a fraudulent SMS that is being circulated. It falsely announces that MTN is awarding BMWs to promote the 2010 FIFA World Cup. This SMS is an Identity theft scam. MTN South Africa urges you (customers) not to fax a copy of your (customer’s) identification to the number provided,” warned MTN.

The company added, “All MTN promotions and competitions are checked and audited. The company does not make use of random SMSs to promote any of its promotions, competitions or give-aways.

MTN has advised all customers via SMS of this fraudulent SMS promotion, and assures them of excellent service from MTN at all times.”
