LG – Handset Plant in Kenya

LG Electronics is considering building a handset plant in Kenya in 2009 with a yearly production capacity reaching about one million handsets.
LG has however not revealed all the details concerning this project. It is speculated that LG will build a meeting plant for mobiles to advance into bigger African economies such as South Africa.

The regional chief Lee Byung recently mentioned that by adding this plant will sell phones locally and export them to neighboring countries.
LG’s target is $6 billion in sales including both the Middle East and African market by 2010. Last month Kenya’s government promised to invest in the nations mobile phone segment as the use of mobile phones have increased because of the lower costs, even though the growth of the mobile industry is slowed down due to the high rates of poverty, illiteracy and difficulty in accessing phone services. According to Experts more telephony companies are showing a bigger interest in the African Market.
