Uganda: New satellite television provider GTV on air now

“The rumour has finally become a reality. GTV is here to provide real value for money…” said the general manager of GTV Uganda Mr Daniel Kagwe during the launch party of the second satellite TV service in Uganda at Ange Mystique on Friday.
Guests were treated to a red-carpet affair outside the club before getting inside to an open bar from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m.

Five people had won five decoders during a press conference at Kampala Serena Hotel in the morning and the number of winners went to 10 when five more won in a raffle at Ange Mystique.

Information and Communication Technology minister Ham Mulira who was the chief guest said he was excited by the entry of GTV onto to the Ugandan market.
KFM’s Aisha Alibhai was the emcee and artistes Bobi Wine, Ragga Dee and Bebe Cool performed.

The GTV commercial director Rhys Torrington said that GTV services would go live on June 29 in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

The founder and President of GTV Mr Julian McIntyre said that the launch in East Africa follows a major deal the company signed to carry 80 percent of Barclays Premier League football matches exclusively.

“At GTV, we are passionate about football and we believe in the power of TV to help develop the game in Africa,” he said.

GTV is banking on the exclusive Premiership rights to gain market share. Most Ugandans who subscribe to pay-TV are bar and hotel owners but McIntyre believes GTV packages will lure more average Ugandans.

They have two packages: G-Base, which costs Sh45,000 per month, has G-Prime, E!, God Channel, BBC World, SkyNews, Al-Jazeera, MTV Base, Kiss, Nickelodeon and two additional channels to be revealed soon.

G-Plus offers the full bouquet of G-Base, plus three sports channels: G-sports 1, G-sports 2 and Fox Sports Africa for Sh70,000 monthly.
Dishes and decoders are at Shs350,000 until August 31 when they will be sold at the standard price of Shs400,000.
