South Africa’s largest bank by customer numbers has a new name. Capitec Bank Holdings Limited officially became Capitec Limited on 1 August 2026. Shareholders approved the change at the Annual General Meeting on 31 July. The South African Reserve Bank’s Prudential Authority gazetted the change on 2 October 2026. All figures in this article are in rand as reported by the sources. No conversion from US dollars was required.

What Is Capitec Bank Limited Now?

Capitec Limited is the new name for the group’s holding company. The bank itself continues to operate as Capitec Bank Limited under its existing banking licence. The JSE ticker remains unchanged, so existing shareholders are unaffected.

The group serves 26.6 million clients in South Africa, which means more than one in three South African adults bank with Capitec. Capitec was founded in Stellenbosch in 2001 by Michiel le Roux, Riaan Stassen and Jannie Mouton. The group listed on the JSE in 2002 at R2.75 per share. By August 2026, the market capitalisation exceeded R561 billion.

From Capitec Bank Holdings to a Digital Ecosystem

The name change reflects services Capitec has already built beyond core banking.

Capitec Connect, the group’s mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), launched in September 2022. By 31 August 2026, around 1.8 million clients were using the service. Subscriber numbers grew by about 700,000 in three months. Capitec Connect is now South Africa’s largest MVNO.

Capitec also offers Smart ID services at 248 branches in partnership with the Department of Home Affairs. The group plans to extend the service to all of its branches. In its interim results, Capitec described this as part of its commitment to “being more than a bank.”

The group’s earnings show how far the diversification has already gone:

  • Capitec Connect and value-added services:
The fintech segment contributed 26% of group earnings in the year to February 2026.
  • Insurance:
Capitec’s insurance arm covers millions of South Africans and added 27% to group earnings in the same period.
  • Business banking:
Capitec serves small and medium businesses with cards, lending products and merchant tools.
  • Planned stokvel accounts:
New group accounts are in development as part of the broader client services expansion.

Why the Capitec Limited Name Change Matters

Capitec is not the only institution moving in this direction. FNB has also launched Smart ID card services at its branches, following Capitec and Standard Bank. South African banks are adding mobile connectivity, identity services and insurance to their core product sets.

Capitec’s name change puts a formal label on what the group has already become: a diversified financial services platform. Removing “Bank Holdings” from the corporate name signals that banking is no longer the group’s only significant activity.

For you as a customer, this means Capitec is competing on more than interest rates or fees. The group is building a platform where you can bank, get mobile data, apply for a Smart ID and buy insurance from one app or branch.

South Africa’s Big Four banks face similar pressure. Capitec’s name change marks the moment a bank decided its holding company name should reflect that reality.

Conclusion: SA Banks Are Building Beyond the Branch

Capitec’s path from microlender to platform shows how South Africa’s banking sector is changing. The Capitec Limited name change removes a corporate label that no longer fits the group’s business.

The underlying shift started years before the gazette notice. Capitec Connect’s 1.8 million subscribers and Smart ID services at 248 branches show how far that shift has already gone.

Watch for the planned stokvel accounts and Capitec Connect’s continued expansion as the next steps. If you bank with Capitec, the services available to you through a single app are already far broader than traditional banking.
