Judgement, the latest video game from Japanese developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and executive producer Toshihiro Nagoshi, released worldwide on 25 June 2019. The game was released in Japan on 13 December 2018. Both Toshihiro Nagoshi and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio are renowned worldwide for their Yakuza video game series.
Judgment follows the story of protagonist Takayuki Yagami, who quit his job as a lawyer to become a private detective after an emotional case. Yagami is tasked with investigating a serial murder case in Kamurocho, Japan. Judgment takes a lot of inspiration and cues from the Yakuza series, but the game comes with new gameplay elements. The player will have to scan certain areas for clues, as well as question potential witnesses, research case files and follow targets without getting caught.
In speaking with The Verge, Nagoshi spoke about why the studio chose to create a detective drama, as this genre has not really been explored in the video games medium. “I definitely think it’s a difficult genre to tackle in games, because solving the mystery is so important for progressing the storyline, and I feel like there are so many different types of players and they all have different abilities to solve mysteries,” Nagoshi explained.
In addition to the main story, the game will also include a wealth of side missions, mini-games activities. This is a feature that Yakuza fans will be very familiar with. Some of these activities include pinball, mahjong, drone races, poker and many more.
Judgment will launch worldwide on 25 June 2019 exclusively for the PlayStation 4 and will feature both Japanese and English Audio.
