Vodacom announced the launch of Facebook Flex on Tuesday. In an attempt to lower the cost to communicate and increase connectivity in South Africa, Facebook Flex is the first of many products that it will be launching under the Vodacom Siyakha platform. Using the basic version of Facebook, Vodacom customers will be able to connect with friends and family through Facebook Flex.

Vodacom customers, once they have signed up to the service, can update their Facebook status and comment on posts at no data cost. If users wish to access the multimedia content such as videos and images they can easily switch from the free version to data mode and access the full Facebook service. To use Facebook Flex customers can log on to or dial *111*32#.

According to Nyimpini Mabunda, Chief Officer: Consumer Business Unit, Vodacom understand the role that service providers will have to play if the digital divide is going to be reduced. She added that Vodacom acknowledge the divide between urban and rural areas and are also aware of the cost that faces South Africans when it comes to communication. Facebook is no longer a luxury as many South Africans use it as a means of communication she concluded.

Vodacom will be looking to add other products to their low-cost Siyakha service in order to further help bridge the digital divide.
