The Ugandan ICT ministry has announced that it is establishing an innovation fund to assist young people to enter the ICT the sector.
Speaking at the Uganda Communications Commission’s (UCC) ACIA awards, ICT Minister John Nasasira said the ministry “has developed a five-year ICT Sector Strategy and Investment Plan.” Nasasira applauded the UCC for “encouraging a culture of creativity and analytical thinking among young people.”
Godfrey Mutabazi, the executive director of UCC, noted a continued “growth in the number of entrants for the ACIA awards.”
He said the number of submissions had grown from 163 entrants in 2013 to 281 last year and 398 entries for this year’s edition.
He added that “the quality and quantity of the submissions had improved but said entrants needed to pay more attention to the categories and avoid submitting in the wrong ones.”
For East African economies, the ICT sector has seen widespread growth and with Kenya leading the charge, Uganda hopes that it can enter the market and attract potential new investors as the country aims to develop itself into one of the leaders for ICT across not just East Africa, but the continent as a whole.
