Vodafone Ghana increases market share

The National Communication Authority (NCA) of Ghana has released figures which confirm that mobile operator Vodafone Ghana has increased its subscriber base to 1,357 million, equating to 13,90% of the total market share by end November 2013.

Regional business reports say another of the country’s established operators, Glo, captured 2,86% of the market by increasing the volume of subscribers from 269,615 to 279,054.


Meanwhile a GhanaWeb report claims that MTN, Airtel, Tigo and Expresso have all reportedly lost subscribers. MTN’s base is said to have decreased from 4,762, 030 in October to 4,624, 583 by end November. This represents a drop in market share from 48,30% to 47,37%.

Airtel Ghana reportedly experienced a drop in numbers and secured what is equivalent to 19,57% of the total market share. At the same time Tigo and Expresso also lost market share, with the former securing 15,89% and the latter 0,42% of the market.

The NCA has stated that Ghana’s overall penetration rate has decreased from 37,9% to 37,4%. The figures stipulated relate to data subscriptions.
