MTN Business offers server virtualization

Edwin Thompson, MTN Business

MTN Business, a wholly owned division of mobile operator MTN South Africa, today announced the deployment of its server virtualization solution to provide hosting for its customers.

“Justifying the adoption of a virtual server solution to our customers is almost unnecessary considering the topics of virtualization and cloud computing hit the headlines in 2009 and market trends and opinions indicate that it’s certainly not just hype”, commented Edwin Thompson, General Manager of Infrastructure and Technology at MTN Business.

The virtualized server replaces the need for physical hardware space in a data centre or other resources and can be accessed via an MPLS network or the Internet. The solution will save costs, offer better security and service flexibility and result in minimum downtime.

According to a World Wide Worx survey teleased in 2009 and commissioned by MTN Business, cloud computing and virtualization were high on corporate agendas, with 58% of 200 corporate IT decision-makers and managers surveyed already using cloud computing services, and 63% virtualization.

MTN Server Virtualization can be customized on demand, depending on capacity requirements, can run a series of applications on both Microsoft and Unix operating systems and provide backup service options.
The benefits for MTN Business customers include- no minimum contract term and billing designed on a “pay as you have used per month” model.

MTN Business, the business channel of MTN SA, is focused on providing business communication solutions to both small and large businesses, as well as the public sector.
