Zimbabwe government to deliver internet access to rural communities

The Zimbabwean government has announced a plan to open internet cafes in rural areas of the country, in an effort to bring the advantages of technology to remote and impoverished communities.

Nelson Chamisa, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Information and Communications Technology, told media that the cybercafés will be set up at Zimpost post office branches in remote areas of the country.

“Internet cafes will be put up at every Zimpost depot in rural areas. As long as rural areas are not modernised in terms of communication, we are not going to improve.”

Zimbabwe is one of many countries on the continent struggling with low telecommunications and penetration.

Meanwhile, Chamisa added that the government had also embarked on a programme to computerize Zimbabwe’s ill-equipped schools. He sad: “We have an ongoing programme to computerise the nation through the distribution of computers to different schools countrywide.”
