Vodacom helps restore sight to visually impaired

images_7.jpgSince 2004, almost 4,000 people have had their sight restored thank to Vodacom, a leading cellular service provider in South Africa, who funded the much needed cataract-removal operations.

The company also raised about ZAR4 million during 2008, intended for more assistance to the visually impaired.

The company said in a statement: “Vodacom Foundation provided funding of R3.7 million in 2008 to enable the three beneficiary organisations to perform cataract operations. The funding meant that more than 1700 elderly people received cataract operations during the 2008 Eye Care Awareness Week in October. This brought the total number of operations performed since 2004 to nearly 4000,”

The initiative forms part of Vodacom’s “Goals for Miracles” campaign, whereby the company donates ZAR10,000 for every goal scored by its sponsored teams in the country’s football league. Teams sponsored by Vodacom include Bloemfontein Celtic, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

Nale Mzion Mofokeng, a beneficiary to the Goals for Miracles said, “I can’t thank Vodacom enough for the opportunity to undergo the cataract operation. Prior to this, I couldn’t see people walking in front of me and I wasn’t able to drive.”

  2. I am urgently trying to find a donation towards my 78 year old fathers cataract removal operation. He is a pensioner and is not on medical aid. We have made enquiries and have been told that he would have to wait until at least 2010 before he can be attended to at a government eye hospital. By this time he will have completely lost the vision in one eye, and partially in the other. Kindly forward information on how to apply for Vodacom’s help. Regards

  3. For teh past five and a half years, I have been running a free project to assist disadvantaged elderly persons in Morojaneng Township (Dewetsdorp, under the umbrella of our local Old Age Home, Stillehawe) with medical follow-up checks and care and assistance to help them at homes. We currently have 180 persons we check every month. Recently a retired medical doctor has been assisting on these visits. We have done eye checks on all the patients and at least 50 need cataract operations. Six of them ate totally blind, several more are almost blind. All have other medical conditions and poor mobility due to arthritis etc. Several have been sent for cataract operations, but are returned home without having the operation. Would it be possible to make this your project for the year and arrange to send a mobile cataract clinic to us?? Please, please we really need help here. Thanks.
