KENYAN President Mwai Kibaki has acknowledged the role Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays in improving the people’s lives.
Addressing the nation here to mark Jomo Kenyatta’s Day, Kibaki said ICT, encompassing the media, was one of the fastest growing industries in the east African country.
He said ICT created an estimated 5 000 jobs annually in Kenya through the internet cafes, mobile cellular and telecommunications, computing and other related information and technology (IT) service providers.
Although the nation and the international community did not like the new Amendment Communications Bill for 2008, Kibaki said the world today badly needed advanced ICT to enhance communications.
Kibaki’s acknowledgement of the role that IT companies play in the country has been witnessed during the past two years when new players were given the green light to operate freely.
