Globacom, a telecommunications company in Nigeria, is the Official Partner to the global event FIFA U-17 World Cup (communications category) to be hosted from 24 October to 15 November. This comes after Globacom signed a deal memo from FIFA for the National Supporter’s right to the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
allAfrica.com reported that Chief marketing Officer for the FIFA U-17 World cup Local Organising Committee (LOC), Mike Itemuagbor, confirmed Globacom’s involvement in the event and said that Globacom will offer cutting edge technology-driven telecommunications products and services, which will serve the communication needs of FIFA and the media during the championship.
They reported that before any major deals were signed to gain potential sponsors, FIFA conducted checks to establish that the products of the sponsors are not in direct conflict with the Global partners of the world soccer governing body. After running a check on Globacom, FIFA gave the go ahead to issue the deal memo and is now the first major sponsor the LOC has.
In April last year, Globacom expressed interest in the partnership by sending the LOC Chief Executive Officer a letter and then followed up on their interest by sending a team of Globacom officials to visit the LOC Secretariat.
According to the report Globacom is the biggest supporter of football in Nigeria and sponsors the Premier league, National Teams and the Nigerian Football Supporters Club.—Natalie Grobler.
