Kenyan Operators make progress in Seacom cables project

The countdown to the arrival of an international fibre optic link has officially begun after the operators of Seacom announced they had broken ground in Kenya in preparation for the landing expected in June.

Seacom is one of four fibre optic links that the country is banking on to improved telephone and internet connectivity, with costs anticipated to drop to a tenth of current charges once various cable projects are completed in 2009.

“The recent ground-breakings in Kenya and Mozambique are an important milestone. They give Seacom an actual land-based footprint that will allow Tyco Telecommunications, our turnkey project contractor, to install the high-speed optical transmission equipment at these sites soon,” said Mr Brian Herlihy, president of Seacom.
