THE Enugu Regional Transmission Manager of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), Mr. Joseph Eke, yesterday, advised the Federal Government to resist the call for exploration of nuclear technology as a way of meeting the nation’s power needs, saying Nigeria should rather explore fully cheaper resources like gas and coal which abound in the country.
Speaking with reporters shortly after declaring open a 5-day seminar organized for labour leaders in PHCN to update their knowledge on the on-going power sector reforms, Eke said that exploitation of local resources for electricity generation would be cheaper than nuclear technology which, he said, has its problems and challenges.
According to him, the reform process in the power sector has changed the face of the nation’s power sector, stressing that the workshop would equip the participants with the issues involved in the reform process as well as teach them how to dialogue with PHCN management and government on labour issues.
“The essence of the reform in the sector is to improve services and to enable us be in tune with modern practices all over the world. Some people are saying that we should explore nuclear technology, it is alright, but it is better if the government exploit locally available resources like gas and coal, which would translate to cheaper electricity,” he said.
