After more than a decade at the helm, Apple’s Tim Cook has announced he will step down as chief executive officer, marking one of the most significant leadership transitions in the company’s modern history.
Apple confirmed that Cook will assume the role of executive chairman of the board, while John Ternus, currently senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, will take over as CEO effective September 1, 2026.
“It has been the greatest privilege of my life to serve as Apple’s CEO and to be entrusted with leading such an extraordinary company,” Cook said. “I love Apple deeply, and I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to work alongside a team of ingenious, innovative, and dedicated individuals committed to enriching the lives of our customers and building the world’s best products and services.
“John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the integrity to lead with honor. He is a visionary whose contributions to Apple over the past 25 years are immeasurable. I have complete confidence in his leadership and look forward to supporting him during this transition and in my new role as executive chairman.”
Ternus, a long-time Apple executive, expressed gratitude and optimism about stepping into the role.
“I am deeply honored by the opportunity to lead Apple forward,” he said. “Having spent nearly my entire career here, I’ve had the privilege of working with Steve Jobs and learning from Tim Cook. Together with an incredibly talented team, we have helped shape products and experiences that have transformed how people connect and interact.
“I am excited about the future and humbled to take on this responsibility. I remain committed to upholding the values, innovation, and vision that have defined Apple for nearly half a century.”
Cook, who succeeded Steve Jobs in 2011, has overseen a period of unprecedented growth and transformation at Apple, expanding its services ecosystem and strengthening its global market leadership. His transition to executive chairman ensures continuity as the company enters its next chapter under Ternus’ leadership.
