Mr. Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi stands at the forefront of Nigeria’s digital evolution. As the nation’s Chief Technology and Information Officer and Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

He is the driving force behind policies and initiatives shaping Nigeria’s position as a continental leader in innovation, regulation, and digital talent development.

Since his appointment in 2019, Mr. Abdullahi has led a comprehensive national digital transformation agenda, one that balances technical rigor with long-term strategic vision. His leadership reflects a deep understanding of how technology, governance, and human capital intersect to unlock sustainable economic growth in Africa’s largest economy.

From Engineering Foundations to National Impact

Mr. Abdullahi’s career began in 2004 at Galaxy Backbone Limited, Nigeria’s ICT infrastructure agency, where he rose from Network Engineer to Solution Architect. In this role, he was instrumental in designing and deploying critical digital infrastructure that supported national connectivity and government operations. These formative years established his reputation for technical precision, systems thinking, and problem-solving at scale.

In 2014, he joined the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as a Technology Architect, where his focus expanded to enterprise-level transformation. At the CBN, he streamlined IT systems, rationalized licensing processes, and introduced frameworks that significantly improved operational efficiency and cost management. This experience sharpened his ability to align technology with institutional performance—an approach that continues to define his leadership today.

As Director-General of NITDA, Mr. Abdullahi has spearheaded a new era of digital governance in Nigeria. Under his direction, the agency has introduced robust frameworks to strengthen accountability, cybersecurity, and data protection across the public and private sectors.

Key milestones include the automation of IT project clearance across federal institutions, ensuring transparency and value for money in government technology investments. He has also strengthened enforcement of the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), reinforcing trust in Nigeria’s digital economy and aligning national practices with global data protection standards.

Beyond regulation, his leadership has focused on enabling institutions to deliver more efficient, technology-driven public services—laying the foundation for a digitally responsive government.

Central to Mr. Abdullahi’s vision is the belief that Nigeria’s greatest digital asset is its people. To harness the potential of the country’s youthful population, he has overseen the development of the National Digital Talent Strategy, aimed at equipping millions of Nigerians with globally relevant digital skills.

He has also driven the expansion of Digital Economy Centers, Fabrication Labs, and a national network of Innovation Hubs, strengthening Nigeria’s startup ecosystem and providing innovators with access to tools, training, and mentorship. These initiatives are empowering a new generation of entrepreneurs capable of competing on the global stage.

Under his stewardship, the implementation of the Nigeria Startup Act has further transformed the innovation landscape, creating a more predictable, investor-friendly environment for founders and technology businesses.

Global Partnerships and Continental Leadership

Mr. Abdullahi has deepened strategic partnerships with leading global and multilateral organisations, including the World Bank, Microsoft, and the African Development Bank. Through these collaborations, Nigeria has expanded digital skills development and entrepreneurship programs, not only domestically but across Africa.

Most notably, he played a pivotal role in bringing GITEX, one of the world’s largest technology exhibitions, to Nigeria. This landmark achievement underscored Nigeria’s growing influence in Africa’s digital economy and signaled its readiness to compete as a global technology hub.
