From August 28 to 31, 2025, Johannesburg’s Expo Centre became a lively hub of fandom and technology as Comic Con Africa made a dynamic return with record-breaking excitement and engaging experiences.
Every year, millions of fans gather at Comic Con events around the world to celebrate their shared love of comics, movies, gaming, anime, and pop culture. Drawing over 70,000 attendees, the event highlighted the flourishing pop culture scene in Africa, with Vodacom adding to the vibe by adding a digital edge that boosted the convention’s tech appeal.
Vodacom’s flagship digital mall, Vodacom World, made a bold statement at Hall 6 Stand E615, offering attendees a fusion of entertainment, innovation, and rewards. Their standout activation, World of Collectibles, was a multi-award-winning augmented reality experience where visitors hunted digital collectibles using their smartphones. The catch? Every participant walked away with a guaranteed prize and exclusive offers.
From Sony PlayStation 5 consoles to R10,000 Vodacom World vouchers, smart appliances, and even pizza ovens, the prize pool had something for everyone. Attendees who spent R299 or more and either signed up for a new contract or upgraded an existing one gained access to the game, seamlessly blending shopping with interactive fun.
Gamers flocked to participate in the Electronic Arts Football Club (EAFC) Sports leaderboard challenge, where daily competitions ran from 9:00 to 15:00. The top three players each day scored prizes, with first place bagging R1,250.
Alongside games and prizes, the event showcased smart-life technology from big names like Samsung, Apple, Honor, Huawei, Oppo, Tecno, Vivo, and Xiaomi. It combined immersive AR gameplay, exciting prize opportunities, and gaming activations to celebrate the latest in tech and entertainment.
Comic Con remains a vital platform for independent artists, writers, and creators. The event fosters connections between fans and industry insiders, offering aspiring creatives opportunities to showcase their work, network, and gain exposure.
