As societies around the globe shift to accommodate the changes in routines and behaviour caused by the coronavirus pandemic, and the education systems of many countries creep to a halt to spare learners from infection, countries are left to decide how this time spent at home will be made up.
In South Africa, the postponement of classes across institutions will be made up by cutting into holiday time, and in Kenya, classes are expected to continue from home albeit through alternate means, via TechWeez.
Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Education, Professor George Magoha says that the government will facilitate learning through radio, TV, YouTube and the Kenya Education Cloud for the 15-million learners at home, starting by 23 March.
Magoha says that this is possible through a partnership with the Kenya Broadcasting Services – the state broadcaster – to provide radio programmes daily from Monday to Friday through Radio Taifa and English Service.
Lessons will be broadcast from 10:00 – 11:00 am on Radio Taifa, and from 9:15 am – 12:00 pm, and again from 2:00 – 4:00 pm.
Magoha states that for TV learning, lessons will be transmitted by the Kenya Institute and Curriculum Development Edu-Channel TV (KICD). Further, this content will also be uploaded to their YouTube channel.
Finally, Magoha says that the students can also access learning content from the Kenya Education Cloud website which contains KICD approved material.
