Uber introduces tipping function for drivers in South Africa.

As of 27 March 2018, Uber revealed that riders in South Africa will be able to offer tips to their driver-partners. At the end of every trip, riders will now be able to issue a selected range of tipping to their driver-partner. This feature will also be available when ordering food from Uber Eats.

Over the past year, Uber has introduced a number of new features in the Uber application to simplify and improve the experience for driver-partners in South Africa. Some of the changes that have been introduced include paid for wait time, notifications of long trips, ratings protection, and an in-app chat function.

Alon Lits, General Manager for Uber Sub-Saharan Africa explains, “Over the years, we’ve heard a lot of drivers asking us to roll out an in-app tipping function, so their clients can more easily reward great service and the act of going above and beyond what’s expected. Improving the driving experience has been a key priority for us over the last year. We’re excited to roll out this new feature as a continuation of this effort and make the app work best for over 13 000 drivers in South Africa.”

“We believe this will make a huge difference in the driver-partners lives and will ensure they continue to have a positive experience with the Uber app,” concludes Lits.

At the end of each trip, Uber and Uber Eats users will be given the option of various values of tipping, or a customisable amount to their driver-partner or courier. These options will be made available below the rating and compliments section and will remain completely optional. Payments will be deducted from the rider’s registered credit card or cash paying customers are free to tip an additional amount of their choice.

Not all driver-partners will see this option as Uber requires drivers to opt-in before being able to accept tips.

How to tip your driver or courier
• Download the latest version of the app.
• Add a tip after rating your trip. Select from a range of preset amounts or enter a custom amount.
• Tap Done to send your tip.
• Tips will go directly to the driver-partner or courier, Uber receives no service fees
