Data lies at the very core of an organisation’s success in the digital economy, spurring the evolution of data backup and recovery technology.
“As organisations migrate their data to the cloud, the evolution could well be seen as a revolution. One only has to look to Gartner prediction that by 2022, 20 percent of storage systems will be self-protecting, obviating the need for backup applications, up from less than five today,” says Anton Jacobsz, managing director at African value-added distributor, Networks Unlimited.
Gartner also forecasts that by 2021, 50 percent of organisations will augment or replace their current backup application with another solution, compared to what they deployed at the beginning of 2017; and by 2019, despite the increasing effectiveness of countermeasures, successful ransomware attacks will double in frequency year over year, up from two to three million in 2016. One of the few ways to counter ransomware is to maintain backups that allow victims to avoid paying the ransoms.
“Organisations are voicing the opinion that backup needs to improve a lot, not just a little. The ongoing frustration with backup implies that the data protection approaches of the past may no longer suffice in meeting current – much less future – recovery requirements,” write analysts Dave Russell, Pushan Rinnen and Robert Rhame in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Data Center Backup and Recovery Software.
“Rubrik, a solution we are proud to distribute locally, is revolutionising the data backup and recovery landscape,” continues Jacobsz. “Now in only its third year since founding, Rubrik has been positioned by Gartner in the ‘Visionaries’ quadrant of its 2017 Magic Quadrant for Data Center Backup and Recovery Solutions.”
Remarkably, Rubrik is the only new vendor to enter the Magic Quadrant since 2014.
Bipul Sinha, Rubrik co-founder and CEO, commented: “We launched Rubrik’s Cloud Data Management platform with a vision to eliminate backup software and to end the decades-long innovation drought in backup and recovery that had forced IT departments to painfully stitch together inefficient solutions from outdated legacy infrastructure. In just eight quarters of selling, we’ve achieved a USD150 million run rate. We believe our rapid market adoption and positioning as a Visionary in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Data Center Backup and Recovery Solutions validates our strategy for delivering consumer-grade simplicity to the enterprise.”
For mid-market and large enterprises, Rubrik Cloud Data Management dramatically simplifies data management to enable new data services any time, anywhere, regardless of infrastructure.
“Of great benefit to our customers is that not only do they have access to visionary technology that embraces the digital landscape of the future, but they also have access to technology that has radically simplified backup. With Rubrik, it’s simplicity merged with sophisticated technology that stands out when managing and protecting data in the cloud – a solution that sets any organisation on the path of great growth,” says Jacobsz.
Gartner’s Magic Quadrants are based on rigorous analysis, backed up by highly structured methodologies. The scoring and weighting methodology emphasises backup and recovery performance, ease of use, and scalability.
