Samsung has been ranked among the “least green” technology companies in the World. According to a report by the BBC the Greenpeace report, published annually examines the energy footprints of large data centre operators, popular websites and apps across the globe. The technology companies submit information about their energy usage to be evaluated and scored accordingly.
Other companies that were benchmarked include Oracle, Twitter, Google and Apple. Among the weakest performers is Twitter, which according to the report had failed to disclose information about their energy usage and was not available to comment on their outcome.BBC reports that Google and Apple continue to lead the sector with the largest supply of renewable energy.
The companies are graded on factors such as transparency over energy use, the companies commitment to efficient energy use and the ability to create strategic partnerships to increase the supply of renewable energy.
The North American video streaming company, Netflix, had the largest data that Greenpeace has ever profiled. Netflix accounted for one third of internet traffic in North America.
According to the Greenpeace report the IT industry’s energy footprint accounted for 7% of global electricity in 2012, a number set to grow as global internet traffic increases, and it could exceed 12% by 2017. Video streaming accounts for 63% of global internet traffic in 2015, and is projected to reach about 80% by 2020.
