Sony Ericsson to be wholly owned by Sony

Handset maker Sony Ericsson has confirmed that Sony Corporation and Telefonktiebolaget LM Ericsson will be merged into one company – kind of. Sony will acquire Ericsson’s stake in the Sony Ericsson brand, making the joint venture a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony.

“When the transaction closes, subject to normal regulatory approvals and necessary consultations, Sony Ericsson will become a standalone division within Sony Corporation,” Sony Ericsson said in a statement.


The Xperia smartphone range will still serve as the flagship smartphone to Sony’s unique proposition, integrating the Xperia smartphone portfolio to its existing tablet, TV, videogame and personal computer businesses to deliver a more powerful “four screen” experience enabling a connected PC, TV, tablet and smartphone experience for consumers.
